GWP-C Shares Knowledge on Rainwater Harvesting in Rural Community

New Thinking in Water Management

To stimulate new thinking to improve Sri Lanka’s natural resources management, the first Young Water Professionals Symposium for the country was organized by GWP Sri Lanka in association with IWMI and Unilever on 22-23 November in Colombo with the participation of the Hon Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardene and Prof Mohan Munasinghe, Nobel Peace Prize winner 2007 (IPCC), and over 150 participants.

High-level agreement on a shared vision for the Drin River Basin

Following detailed assessment and a structured stakeholders' consultation at national and regional levels, the five Drin River riparian states signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a shared strategic vision for the benefit of about two million people who rely on the basin for drinking water, agriculture, fisheries, industry, and hydropower.

Costa Rica: Better water allocation in the Lake Arenal Watershed (#10)

There were concerns that Lake Arenal in Northern Costa Rica was threatened due to problems of deforestation and possible premature sedimentation, leading the government to take action, resulting in successful national and local benefits in terms of energy produced and area irrigated. The most important lesson learned is the importance of consulting all parties involved before initiating the project to achieve the best result.

Chile: Integrated strategy for the recovery of water resources of Talcahuano (#288)

The Municipality of Talcahuano because of rapid urbanisation is subjected to natural resource degradation. Action was taken and a municipal strategy was created, assigning the municipality as the institution in charge of administering and combating natural resource degradation. This case illustrates the appropriateness of the municipal level of government in successfully addressing the recovery of water resources and environmental management.

Caribbean Experts Look at Establishing a Regional Climate Outlook Forum

The idea of a Regional Climate Outlook Forum (RCOF) originated out of a workshop entitled “Reducing Climate-related Vulnerability” held in Southern Africa in October 1996. Almost a year later, towards the end of 1997, the first RCOF was held in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa where the idea was birthed.

Tanzania Water Partnership

The Tanzania Water Partnership (TWP) was launched in Feb 2004 as the 8th CWP in the Southern African Sub Region. After its launch, the CWP addressed the needs of the 2002 Water Policy, and deliberated on strategies that could assist the government in the implementation of the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) Institutional Setup.  Read more on the background of the TWP.
