Between 2017 and 2023, global performance on implementing integrated water resources management (IWRM) increased from 49% to 57%. However, the current rate of progress would need to at least double in order to meet the 2030 goal on clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).
The Global Water Leadership in a Changing Climate programme (GWL) has held multi-stakeholder consultations in seven countries identifying the most critical barriers to climate-resilient water management. Working groups have now been formed to investigate these barriers and develop responses, beginning with a ‘root cause analysis’. Updates from three countries follow.
The 2023 United Nations Water Conference was successfully held from 22-24 March 2023. The event was held at UN Headquarters in New York, co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, aimed to assess the progress of the Water Action Decade 2018-2028 and reaffirm water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The mission of the Global Water Partnership to support countries in the adoption and implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular Agenda 6.5.1 to track the degree of IWRM. Thus, the global office and the regional secretariat of Southeast Asia participated in the main events, and side events (on-site and virtual events).

On 11 December, GWP is co-curating the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 at COP28 in the #Water4Climate Pavilion together with the Green Climate Fund and French Water Partnership.
On the occasion of the 10th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 10) to the Water Convention from 23 to 25 October 2024 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA), the West African Economic and Monetary Union Commission (WAEMU), the Pôle Eau Dakar, Secretariat of the Water Convention and the United Nations Environment Programme - DHI Centre (UNEP-DHI), FAO co-organised a side event on the theme of ‘Implementing the Convention and promoting integrated water resources management through national and regional action’.
Over 80 participants representing African Union Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) have been trained in tracking and reporting water investments using the AIP-PIDA Water Investment Scorecard, a key tool under the African Union’s Africa Water Investment Programme (AIP).
