Körös/Crisuri transboundary River Basin is in need of more transboundary cooperation and coordination to ensure sustainable management of the resource. To address this, Romania and Hungary jointly developed a strategy for integrated water resources management, aiming to strengthen cooperation. The key lesson is that access to, and management of data is at the core of decision-making in the case of transboundary water management.
GWP participates at the 2014 NAP Expo, taking place in Bonn, Germany on 8-9 August 2014. It is the second NAP Expo, organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) under the UNFCCC.
The Senegal River has seen considerable migration of people in view of worsening drought and desertification. Furthermore, it is subjected to threats such as loss of arable land, and pollution from waste. To address the problems and to realise the potential of the basin, the Senegal River Development Organisation was established by three of the riparian states. As an anticipation of drought problems, Indonesia Water Partnership held a dialogue with Local community on drought in a Meeting Room of Ministry of Public Work in Jakarta, Indonesia on 11 December 2013.
Indonesia is a country with two season, dry season and rainy season. During the dry season, drought has been a problem for society, industry and agriculture. There is not enough water to drink, cleaning, and washing for society. For farmers, it can be crop failure, late harvesting which make farmers lost their fund and start cropping from beginning. And for industry, there is also not enough water to run the business.
With the collapse of the USSR, the water sector seized to be subsidised leading to deterioration of basic infrastructure. Action was taken to partially transfer the responsibility for operation and maintenance of irrigation systems to water users. Nonetheless, this has had limited success because it has been seen as an additional cost rather than benefit. This illustrates that for this to work, the returned benefits need to be higher than the costs.
