GWP-C at SIDS 4 Conference in Antigua

Two representatives from the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean, joined the vibrant SIDS4 Conference in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27-30th, at the American University of Antigua (AUA). GWP-C’s team of Regional Coordinator Ms. Simone Lewis and Mr. Kerron Martinez, engaged actively throughout the conference advancing our mission of promoting sustainable water management practices with the context of Small Island Developing States.

Transboundary Cooperation Strengthened: Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique Sign Historic Agreement for Joint Management of Ruvuma River Basin

The governments of Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the joint management and development of the Ruvuma/Rovuma River Basin, a transboundary river basin traversing across the three SADC member states. Ministers of Water from the three member states; Hon. Abida Mia from Malawi, Hon. Carlos Alberto Fortes Mesquita from Mozambique, and Hon. Jumas Hamidu Aweso from Tanzania, signed the MoU on behalf of their countries.

The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa Board has announced the appointment of Mr. Andrew Takawira as the Interim Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer. The appointment is effective 1 February 2025.

Mali, establishment of the National Coordination of Users of Natural Resources in the Volta Basin

On 26 June 2026, Mali established the first National Coordination of Users of Natural Resources in the Volta Basin. National conferences are to be held in each of the six countries of the Volta Basin with a view to establishing a representative, structured and recognised National Coordination of Natural Resource Users through the validation of co-opted organisations, the adoption of constitutive texts, the work plan and capacity building, and the initiation of official recognition procedures with the administrative authorities.

Togo establishes its National Coordination of Volta Basin Users: a decisive step towards inclusive governance of natural resources

Kara, 13 August 2025 — Following in the footsteps of Mali, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, Togo has taken a major step forward in participatory governance of the Volta Basin. Following a national workshop held in Kara, the country officially established a National Coordination of Natural Resource Users, thereby demonstrating its commitment to sustainable, inclusive and concerted management of the basin's resources.
