Guatemala: Partnership for IWRM in the Naranjo river basin (#327)

The lack of laws and regulations, as well as good administration and management, contribute to poor water governance. In the Naranjo river basin, action was taken to implement IWRM after initiatives stemming from individuals with personal conviction of its importance. This has led to the creation of some formal legislation and the process of implementing IWRM. This consequently illustrates the potential important role of individuals in driving policy change.

Vietnam: IWRM principles strengthen sustainability of rural water supply and sanitation (#122)

Half of the land area of Tien Giang Province in Vietnam is exposed to annual floods and the other half to saline intrusion. Action was taken to formulate the National RWSS Strategy and efforts were made to make local communities aware of methods and approaches in harvesting water and well drilling that are cost effective and sustainable in their development. The key lesson is the value of appropriate planning prior to any project.

GWP Malaysia: Changing behavior through Integrated Flood Management in Malaysia

There are no formal categorizations of floods in Malaysia but is often broadly categorized as monsoonal, flash or tidal floods. In addition, floods are also described based on its location, characteristics, the cause, the timing as to when it occurs and its duration. (Department of Drainage Malaysia information)

WACDEP Cameroon supports the mainstreaming of water security and climate resilience into the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)

The theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity in 2013 chosen by the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) is “Water and Biodiversity”. This theme was chosen to coincide with the United Nations designation of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation. The International day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on the 22nd of May.
