Vietnam: IWRM principles strengthen sustainability of rural water supply and sanitation (#122)

Half of the land area of Tien Giang Province in Vietnam is exposed to annual floods and the other half to saline intrusion. Action was taken to formulate the National RWSS Strategy and efforts were made to make local communities aware of methods and approaches in harvesting water and well drilling that are cost effective and sustainable in their development. The key lesson is the value of appropriate planning prior to any project.

Estonia: Viru and Peipsi Catchment Area Management Plan (#356)

Oil-shale mining and oil-shale based electricity production has caused serious damage to ground and surface water in the Viru-Peipsi catchment area in Estonia. Action was taken to enhance the protection of the water resources through a project that set out a management plan. The project included data collection, monitoring and capacity building. Due to the success of this project, it can be used as an example for future developments.

GWP and OECD Launch Global Dialogue Project

Global Water Partnership and the OECD have launched a joint project to establish a Global Dialogue on Water Security and Sustainable Growth. The major output of the cooperation will be a milestone report to be presented at the World Water Forum in 2015 in South Korea.

Uruguay: Capacity building for climate disaster risk management at local level in Pantanoso watershed in Montevideo (#439)

The Pantanoso watershed in Montevideo has been identified as vulnerable to threats of intense rains and floods, posing risks to the human settlements. To combat the risks, action was taken by the local population and governmental authorities to engage in a project on Climate Related Disaster Risk Management. The key lesson is that strengthening vulnerable communities upon climate risks represents a key tool for the IWRM, since it contributes to empowering the population.

Protection and Sustainable Use of the Dinaric Karst Aquifer System (DIKTAS)

The DIKTAS Project (2010 - 2015) was a collaborative effort to improve knowledge and attract the international community’s attention on the widespread, yet vulnerable and poorly understood karst aquifers in the Dinaric Region; it was also an effort to enhance coordination among countries, agencies and other stakeholders towards an equitable, sustainable, integrated management of the Dinaric Karst Aquifer System’s transboundary water resources and the protection of the unique dependent ecosystems from natural and man-made hazards including climate change.

Armenia: State Water Cadastre Information System of the Republic of Armenia (#309)

Fragmented data collection made processing, use and interpretation of data challenging. To attain a more uniform data collection, the State Water Cadastre was initiated, designed to collect data on surface and ground waters, water users, water quality and water quantity. Through the implementation of this programme, data was more easily available and also provided for more accurate response to environmental challenges.
