GWP Honduras together with Fundación Vida and the Association of Municipalities of Honduras (AMHON) coordinated a workshop to train representatives of 25 municipalities of western Honduras on IWRM in the city of Danli, on September 6, 2012. This activity was part of a broader program led by AMHON and the National Forest Conservation Institute (ICF) on the protection of forests. The objective was to impart knowledge on the main concepts of IWRM to increase its use in local settings.
The Chilika Lagoon was subjected to environmental degradation. Action was taken by the Chilika Development Authority through the application of GIS and remote sensing tools for monitoring and assessment of the lagoon, resulting in significant improvement of the ecological health of the lagoon. The key lesson learnt is how a clear understanding of the coastal process and the river basin is essential for restoration of a coastal wetland.
Food security is considered one of the greatest challenges currently facing humanity. Water is a crucial natural resource in food production, and for this reason food and water experts met in Costa Rica. The aim was to establish a dialogue between the two sectors.
To meet demand, the water sector of Lesotho is undertaking institutional reforms and tackling financial and technical constraints. Action was initiated through a study conducted in four phases including data collection, development options, financing strategy and integration of the findings. The project was carried out in through capacity building activities in cooperation with several stakeholders. Predominantly, this case study illustrates the importance of combining data from several authorities into one consistent format.
On the margins of the outreach meeting of the Post 2015 UN High Level Panel of Eminent Persons, the global water community held thematic consultations on water on 29th and 30th of January 2013 in Monrovia, Liberia with the participation of The President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Mr. Bulat Yessekin, GWP CACENA Regional Council Member from Kazakhstan, is selected to the GWP Steering Committee for 2013-2015 by the GWP Nomination Committee.
WACDEP Zimbabwe held a Catchments and Sub-Catchments Consultation and Action Planning Workshop from 12-13 September 2013, in Kadoma, about 140km south-west of Harare. The workshop with the aim of contributing towards the review and submission of written comments for the first draft of the National Climate Change Response Strategy for Zimbabwe (NCCRS) attracted over 65 participants (chairpersons from some of the 47 Sub-catchment and 7 Catchments in Zimbabwe, and officials from MWRDM and Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA). GWP Malaysia and the Global Environment Centre co-organised a Regional Training of Trainers course on Ecosystem Services and IWRM on 18-21 June 2012. It was targeted to enable greater awareness and understanding on ecosystem management based on a holistic and sustainable manner aimed at empowering relevant stakeholders in Malaysia with knowledge and skills needed to adopt the ecosystem services concept.
A workshop on Water Integrity took place from 20-22 May 2013 at Birchwood Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa. The workshop discussed the theme “Strengthening Civil Society and Media’s Role in Promoting Integrity and Accountability in the Water Sector”. The course was part of a larger capacity building programme on integrity and accountability in the water sector developed by the UNDP Water Governance Facility at SIWI, Cap-Net, WaterNet and the Water Integrity Network (WIN) in order to assist in building institutional capacity among key stakeholders. Previous workshops have targeted water managers, and other water decision-makers as primary target groups.
