IWRM policy and roadmap for Guyana drafted by GWP Caribbean

GWP Caribbean offered to assist the Republic of Guyana in managing the country's water resources by developing an IWRM policy and roadmap, with the help of a consultant. Guyana has several existing policies which can be applied to water resources management; however, there is no single National Water Resources Management Policy for the country.

The Freshwater-Coast-Sea Nexus

Cancun, Mexico. December 7. On Saturday, December 4, Dr. Letitia A. Obeng, Chair of Global Water Partnership (GWP) spoke briefly to the participants who attended The Oceans Day at Cancun.

“We have to work together,” said Dr. Obeng, referring to the need to coordinate and unify efforts between those who work on integrated water resources management and those who work with oceans.

Raising Awareness Among Media

Media is often a critical link between policymakers and the public. The media focus on environmental issues is increasing, especially in light of the global interest in climate change. This is why GWP regularly organizes awareness-raising workshops for journalists. GWP South America and GWP Caribbean recently organised workshops as a first step to creating journalist networks for knowledge sharing in water resources management.

Watershed councils established in Honduras

The National Water Law, approved in 2009 (see GWP in Action 2009 Annual Report, p. 24), aims to establish a national framework for water management and stipulates the establishment of watershed councils to improve water governance through stakeholder participation.
