Moldova

Moldova is a landlocked state, located in Eastern Europe, bordering Romania and Ukraine. It has moderate climate. Moldova is well endowed with various sedimentary rocks and minerals including sand, gravel, gypsum, and limestone as well as other natural resources such as phosphorites. Natural hazards include landslides.

Nostrum-DSS & INECO Joint Event

The “Nostrum-Dss & INECO Joint Event” was successfully held on the 25 Oct. 2007, Larnaca, Cyprus. A large number of EU project coordinators, researchers, and representatives of relevant International Institutions (i.e. MED-EUWI, GWP-Med, DFID, CEDARE, Cap-Net UNDP, EC-DG EuropeAid, ICS-UNIDO), including European Commission representatives participated to exchange scientific knowledge and project results on different topics in the domain of water resources management in the Mediterranean Region.

Overall Objectives of the Regional Water Partnership in Central Asia and Caucasus

According to the Johannesburg Declaration (2002), the ultimate goal of the activities of Central Asia and Caucasus Partnership Network is to support and assist the countries in implementation of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles towards the World Summit on Sustainable Development and Millennium Development Goals. This process must be accompanied by public involvement in decision-making, support for the political will for cooperation between sectors and countries, initiating dialogue among all stakeholders and supporting practical activities locally implemented including capacity building.

Uruguay: Capacity building for climate disaster risk management at local level in Pantanoso watershed in Montevideo (#439)

The Pantanoso watershed in Montevideo has been identified as vulnerable to threats of intense rains and floods, posing risks to the human settlements. To combat the risks, action was taken by the local population and governmental authorities to engage in a project on Climate Related Disaster Risk Management. The key lesson is that strengthening vulnerable communities upon climate risks represents a key tool for the IWRM, since it contributes to empowering the population.

Romania: Cost-effectiveness analysis for realistic river basin plans (#391)

The EU Water Framework Directive requires member states to identify and implement program of measures for reaching good water status for all water bodies by 2015. In Romania, this requires substantial investments. In response to address the pressures in the Romanian river basins, a number of measures have been identified, divided into basic measures and supplementary measures. The key lesson is the value of approaching the issue with several complimentary measures.
