Water, Climate and Development Programme launched in Zimbabwe

The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) in partnership with the Ministry of Water Resources Development and Management (MWRDM), today launches the Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) for Africa in Zimbabwe.
The launch, which is in the form of an Inception Workshop is being held on 10 and 11th April 2013 at the Holiday Inn, Harare, Zimbabwe.

Sharing Lessons on Water Management Issues in South Asia

GWP SAS is arranging a workshop with the aim to share lessons and experiences on current water management issues, opportunities and challenges faced by the deltaic regions in South Asia, including impending climate change impacts.

Nigeria: Multi-stakeholder participation in the management of water resources, Komadugu Yobe Basin, upstream of Lake Chad (#429)

Due to increased agricultural irrigation and large scale dam projects, and inappropriate land and water management practices, the water inflow to the Komadugu Yobe Basin has dramatically been reduced. Action has been taken to establish a legal and policy enabling environment, as well as to increase knowledge among the local communities to establish more sustainable behaviour. The main lesson learnt was that although a multi-stakeholder participatory approach is slow, it helped to mobilise partnership.

Rainwater Harvesting in Trinidad

GWP Caribbean together with its partner the Water Resources Agency (WRA) has established a Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) system within the Fondes Amandes community in St. Ann’s Trinidad. The RWH system is patterned after a system based on best practices. The installation of the system is part of GWP Caribbean’s contribution to the project Water for Life: The Trinidad and Tobago Initiative.

USA: Application of watershed models for integrated water quality and coastal resources restoration in Chesapeak Bay ( #123)

Scientific and estuarine research on the Chesapeake Bay pinpointed several areas that required attention including nutrient over-enrichment, dwindling underwater Bay grasses, and toxic pollution. Action was taken and the Chesapeake Bay Commission was established to address the issues. This case illustrates how the use of modelling can be a cost-effective tool in helping to implement watershed restoration actions and monitor goals set by stakeholders.
