Integrated management of groundwater resources is a challenge of particular importance in the region, especially in the arid lands. A 3-days Training Course on Groundwater Assessment and Development is organized from 13 to 15 December 2006, in Hurghada, Egypt, by CEDARE, GWP-Med, UNDP and the Eastern Desert Project.

Water is central to Africa's development. To implement the climate change commitments in the Sharm el Sheikh Declaration and address the threat of climate change in Africa, the management of water resources must move to the top of the development agenda. This is the overall goal of the Water, Climate and Development Programme for Africa, that runs from May 2011 to April 2016.
Conflicts over water resources exist in Vietnam as in many parts of the world where a large population have to share scarce water resources. Developed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a climate change adaptation strategy for the water sector was officially launched at COP 17 in December 2011 in Durban, South Africa. It effectively sees SADC take up the challenge of responding to the threat of climate change in southern Africa.
