If left unattended, the twin engines of urbanisation and resource depletion will undermine efforts to achieve and sustain water security: water availability and access will be eroded and conflicts over use will escalate. Integrated Urban Water Management is a way to prevent that, which is explored in this paper. It is a Perspectives Paper, meant to incite a discussion on important issues related to water and development.

As part of GWP-C’s efforts to build greater awareness and understanding of IWRM in the region, it developed this regional case study to provide a detailed look into the IWRM process in Jamaica, highlighting the process of developing an IWRM plan and the challenges involved.

Caribbean Ministers with responsibility for water, along with regional water managers and other experts, met to discuss “Water Management Financing in the Caribbean” at the GWP Caribbean and the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association’s (CWWA) 7th Annual High Level Session (HLS) on October 6-7, 2011, in Guadeloupe. One of the major issues at the Ministerial Forum was the need for regional governments to decide whether water utilities are to be run as a social service or a business.

The National Water Law, approved in 2009 (see GWP in Action 2009 Annual Report, p. 24), aims to establish a national framework for water management and stipulates the establishment of watershed councils to improve water governance through stakeholder participation.

Sweden’s Ambassador to the UN Secretary General’s Global Sustainability Panel, Torgny Holmgren, inaugurated a Stockholm-based development hub on Wednesday, November 17.

The First Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20, which will discuss the substantive themes, will be held from May 17-19, 2010 at the United Nations ECOSOC in New York.

The investigation and survey on water resources in islands, rural drinking water safety and small watershed management carried out by GWP China Fujian, with the support from Fujian Provincial Water Resources Department, starting from earlier this year, ended in August.
