During periods of flooding people suffer all manner of deprivations, with access to clean water being among the first things to go. Since the original Rio Earth Summit in 1992, floods, droughts, and storms have affected 4.2 billion people (UNISDR 2012), with the impact on sanitation processes and hygiene receiving little attention.
Cross-sectoral solutions to address WEFE Nexus resource management tradeoffs were discussed on 26 May 2021, at the meeting on “Nexus Solutions and Investments in the Western Balkans”, co-organised by UNECE, Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
"The Green Deal for a Sustainable Future" was the theme of the 2021 digital edition of the European Development Days (EDD21) on 15-16 June, a European Commission event. GWP was represented at a high-level panel on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and at a discussion on the role of water as a connector in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both discussions highlighted integration between sectors as key to improving water governance.
The 9th session of the meeting of the Parties to the UN Water Convention was organized from 29 September to 1 October 2021. On this occasion, GWP-Med had the opportunity to present the breath of its work on transboundary water management, the water-energy-food-ecosystems Nexus approach as well as the role of women in promoting transboundary water cooperation, during the MOP9 meeting and in several side events.

Every year on February 2nd, World Wetlands Day is commemorated to promote awareness of wetlands. The celebration of World Wetlands Day in 2022 is especially significant, as the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 75/317 on August 30, 2021, establishing February 2 as World Wetlands Day.
To promote a climate-resilient approach to the management of water resources in the Central African Republic, GWP-Central African Republic (CWP-CAR), in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy Development and Water Resources, organized a two-day multi-stakeholder workshop on May 4–5 in Bangui to popularize and promote the ownership of existing strategy and policy documents in the country’s water and climate sectors.
