GWP Regions

GWP at COP28, the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai

COP28 UAE (Nov 30 to Dec 12) will see the world take stock of its progress on the Paris Agreement with the objective of providing a comprehensive assessment of progress since its adoption. This will help recalibrate climate action efforts with needs in order to bridge the gaps in progress.

The Stocktake synthesis report, released on October 4, already alerts the global community that more action is needed now on all fronts, including importantly on increasing effective water-related actions.

When it comes to adapting to climate change, over 90% of developing countries prioritize water-related actions. However, only 10% of these can package their needs into bankable investments to secure required financing. GWP’s 2020-2025 Strategy aims to address this water & climate resilience investment gap by aiming to support over 30 countries to access climate finance.

GWP at COP28

As a leading authority on water governance – with its on-the-ground global network – GWP supports countries to access climate finance and build water & climate resilient water investments.

GWP will be active throughout the COP as an observer organisation and as a core partner of the COP28 Water for Climate Pavilion.

The overall objective of GWP’s engagement at the COP is to promote implementation of the Paris Agreement, via climate change adaptation through integrated water resources management. This will be achieved by promoting outcomes of the various streams of GWP’s work on water and climate resilience including the Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP), the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP) and the Global Water Leadership (GWL) Programme.

GWP’s activities will focus on:

Advocating for the inclusion of IWRM into the WASH targets that have been proposed for the Global Goal on Adaptation.
Mobilizing High-level decision makers and partnerships for scaling-up climate resilient water investments.
Showcasing the successful results of GWP’s work on the development of high quality proposals for climate resilient water investments.
Promoting available tools and support by the IDMP and APFM for disaster risks management.

AU Africa Pavilion

2 December: Launch of the AIP High Level Panel Investment Action Plan and 2023 Global Water Innovation Changemaker Awards announcement

As the Secretariat for the AIP High Level Panel, GWP will raise visibility of the AIP objectives and components and seek partnering opportunities, as well as continue fundraising for the programme via the Mind the Gap campaign launched at UNGA in September 2023.
Announce the winners of the Water Innovation Changemakers Awards 2023, in collaboration with K-Water. 30 Finalists were announced at UNGA in September 2023. Winning water and climate innovations will access climate finance to scale up their application and impact.

Water for Climate Pavilion:

11 December: GWP has been selected along with Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the French Water Partnership (FWP) to co-curate the thematic day on Transformative Climate Finance More information on the Day
4 December: GWP will support Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) in the curation of the day on Global Goal on Adaptation with The Nature Conservancy

Resilience Hub:

3 December: The 2020 Water ChangeMakerAwards (WCMA) winner, Masungi Georeserve Foundation, will participate as a GWP partner at a side event titled Water Resilience in the Climate Era: Innovating Sustainable Water Management and Governance to share experiences on youth and water governance based on their project that won the 2020 WCMA.
