GWP at Habitat III

GWP took an active role in the Habitat III Conference, taking place in Quito, Ecuador, on 17-20 October 2016. Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development. It focused on the implementation of a New Urban Agenda, building on the Habitat Agenda of Istanbul in 1996. This was the first United Nations global summit after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

On 18 October 2016, together with GWOPA at UN-Habitat & the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (IAS) at United Nations University (UNU), GWP co-convened an event: “Beyond Basic Services: Rethinking the values, functions, and management of waters in our cities”.

GWP also discussed with partners the new initiative “Towards an Urban Waters Hub”. This is an open international alliance of members who promote innovative approaches to urban water and wastewater management, with a focus on integrated approaches, green and resilient solutions that benefit all levels of society.
