SNO meets with partners

GWP Senior Network Officer (SNO) Julienne ROUX took the opportunity of her stay in Ouagadougou to meet and get to know some of GWP/WA's strategic partners. Together with the executive secretary, she met the ECOWAS Water Resources Coordination Centre (WRCC) and the Executive Directorate of the Volta Basin Authority (DE ABV).

On 19 April, together with the Executive Secretary and the IDMP PM, SNO was welcomed by Mr. Mahamane TOURE, Programme Officer at ECOWAS/WRCC. He recalled that GWP-WA and WRCC have been partners since WRCC's establishment. Several initiatives have been implemented jointly, notably the development of the West African regional water policy adopted in 2008. Currently, the joint initiative being implemented concerns the establishment of the ECOWAS Regional Water Observatory in collaboration with the DHI.

On 19 April, together with the Executive Secretary and the PROGISAO Officer, SNO was welcomed by Mr Mahamane TOURE, Programme Officer at CEMR/CEDAO. He recalled that GWP-AO and CEMR have been partners since CEMR's birth. Several initiatives have been implemented jointly, notably the development of the West African regional water policy adopted in 2008. Currently, the joint initiative being implemented concerns the establishment of the ECOWAS Regional Water Observatory in collaboration with the DHI.

Preliminary discussions are currently underway to identify other avenues for collaboration. Examples include the implementation of the NEXUS project and the development of guidelines in the area of integrated drought management based on the Integrated Drought Management Technical Guide (ISG) developed by GWP-WA in collaboration with AGRHYMET/CILSS.

The meeting held on April 20 at the VBA Executive Directorate took stock of the work in progress and to exchange on the prospects with the ABV. The Executive Director and his Deputy noted that relationships with GWP/WA are very good and will intensify with future and existing projects including the initiative on Integrated Flood Management in the Volta Basin. They indicated that reflections are underway for a new initiative in one of the Volta sub-basins. This should build on the achievements and lessons learned from the Mekrou project, the GWP European Union funded project whose first phase ended in December 2017.
