“Water Scarcity, Security and Democracy: A Mediterranean Mosaic”

A new and much awaited book by the Cornell University, the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future and the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean was published in September 2014. As its title indicates, the book is a mosaic on its own - of stories, insights, questions and answers about water in the Mediterranean.

Panamá: IWRM Planning Experiences at Municipal Level in Indio River Basin (#451)

River Indio’s watershed is the source of water supply for the growing demand in the metropolitan area of Panamá. However, due to extensive human activity and mismanagement the area has been affected by extensive deterioration. Action has been taken to reinforce natural resources restoration and water resources conservation, grounded in government strenthening and integrated management. Important lessons can be drawn from this in terms of IWRM, as it sets a clear example of active participation of the communities and the local authorities.

Transboundary: Five countries, one biosphere; managing the floodplain (# 442)

The European rivers Mura, Drava and Danube form a 700 km long “green belt” connecting more than 800,000 ha of highly valuable natural and cultural landscapes in five countries (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia). This area is a symbol of unity among the countries and is planned to become a protected Transboundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve “Mura-Drava-Danube” (TBR MDD).

Peru: Aguas Tratadas: Gestión Participativa Comunal y su impacto en el Desarrollo Humano y de los Ecosistemas (#436)

El presente trabajo se ha elaborado por la invitación de GWP Sudamerica. Muestra lacapacidad de gestión de los campesinos en el uso de las aguas servidas tratadas para generarcambios productivos, sociales, económicos y ambientales. Metodológicamente, se trabaja conuna muestra de 100 personas, teniendo como el eje ordenador de las ideas, la iniciativa de loscampesinos organizados para salir de su pobreza, usando las aguas servidas tratadas para laproducción agropecuaria.
