A Handbook for Integrated Water Resources Management in Transboundary Basins of Rivers, Lakes and Aquifers

More than half the world’s population depends upon water resources shared by more than one country. The Handbook provides guidance on planning and collaboration beyond national boundaries. In successive sections, it addresses the concepts of cooperation, governance, information systems, participation, planning and financing. It considers the specific challenges related to inland waterways, major water infrastructure, ecosystems and climate change. This Handbook was produced jointly by GWP and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) in order to capture experiences with planning and implementing IWRM.

Manual para la gestión integrada de los recursos hídricos de las cuencas transfronterizas de ríos, lagos y aquíferos

The experience gained under existing transboundary cooperation agreements for many transboundary basins, allow today saying that Integrated Water Resources Management works well on the basin-scale of transboundary rivers when there is a real willingness of the stakeholders concerned. How then to move from theory to practice to implement transboundary cooperation on water? How can you possibly establish an effective and lasting transboundary basin organization? To support this process, INBO, GWP together with other knoweldge partners (UNECE, UNESCO, GEF, EVREN and AFD) have worked together to produce this book presented at the World Water Forum in Marseilles (March 2012). The document is in Spanish.
