Transboundary: Establishing a transboundary organisation for IWRM in the Senegal River basin (#45)

The Senegal River has seen considerable migration of people in view of worsening drought and desertification. Furthermore, it is subjected to threats such as loss of arable land, and pollution from waste. To address the problems and to realise the potential of the basin, the Senegal River Development Organisation was established by three of the riparian states. This case gives important insights into how an institutional and legal infrastructure can be built in stages.

Honduras: Early warning system of La Masica Municipality (#392)

The Cuero River area is particularly susceptible to floods, making the communities living in the surrounding area vulnerable. This area was consequently chosen for implementation of an Early Warning System Project. Action was taken in three separate phases in three different areas. From the experience, the lesson learnt is that more effort should be devoted to training of a leader group that can promote and consolidate the system’s self-sufficiency.

Climate Change Adaptation and IWRM - An Initial Overview

Water is the primary medium through which Climate Change will impact people, ecosystems and economies. This brief suggests that the IWRM approach provides the most adequate framework to manage these impacts. It addresses the most important challenges and explores different measures within the IWRM framework to meet them. Policy briefs provide policy makers with information on water resources management. They are written by the GWP Technical Committee, a group of internationally recognised professionals in integrated water resources management.
