A multi-stakeholder consultation held in N’Djamena, Chad on September 4th 2020 revealed that the level of implementation of indicator 6.5.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which tracks the “degree of implementation of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM)” in the country has increased from 32% (2017 baseline) to 37%.

August 12 marks International Youth Day, and the 2021 edition has the theme, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.” We spoke with youth in West and Southern Africa about their involvement in GWP activities around water and food. The Transboundary Freshwater Security Governance Train continues its journey in 2022 on 16 February, with its 10th interactive session in the series. This time, the event explores how the design of Transboundary Water Agreements affects their performance and whether there are key ingredients that should structure these agreements.

The 2020 GWP Network Meeting concluded on 22 October, with over 900 GWP Partners signed up for the virtual event and others watching the Facebook Live feed. The overall theme was ‘Bringing the Change’ in the context of the GWP 2020-2025 Strategy and as the world faces a pandemic.

Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) is working with Country Water Partnerships (CWPs) in the region to operationalise programme plans and facilitate their accreditation with the Global Water Partnership Organisation (GWPO) in Sweden.

In 2020, Global Water Partnership (GWP) in collaboration with The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the custodian agency, which coordinates reporting on SDG 6.5.1 indicator, together with UNEP-DHI Centre and Cap-Net, operates the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, to support 60 countries in implementing the survey. For the PAN Asia region, the reports have successfully submitted and it is now the time to find out the lesson learned behind the process.

The Burkina Faso project team carried out an exchange and experience sharing mission with that of Benin from 16 to 22 February 2020 in Cotonou and Natitingou (Benin). The TFTC project is active in Benin in reforestation, promotion of improved stoves and environmental education.

The United Nations system designated 2020 as the year in which most of the indicators under Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation were to be updated. GWP, through its SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, committed to assisting at least 60 countries in mapping out progress on SDG 6.5.1 – the degree of implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Despite the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, about 2,400 participants in 61 countries were consulted, mostly online.
