Darío Soto-Abril took up his new role as GWP Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 1 March. In this interview, he shares his vision for the network at a time when GWP celebrates its 25th Anniversary. He also reflects on his personal view of water, as he answers the World Water Day 2021 question on what water means to him. The 11th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD) is held as a video conference on 27 and 28 April. The United Kingdom, as President of the next Climate Change Conference (COP 26), co-chairs the PCD. The event focuses on sustainable recovery after the current health crisis.

Climate change is getting worse. Floods, droughts and rising sea levels are threatening sanitation systems – from toilets to septic tanks to treatment plants. It is against this backdrop that World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19 November, raising awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. GWP celebrates the day by showcasing five Water ChangeMaker stories, providing hope that change is possible.

Music has the power to connect us, tell stories, inform and educate large audiences on various topics. With this in mind and coupled with the fact that this year marks the 16th anniversary of the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), in mid-June the organisation launched its “Theme Song Challenge.”

GWP-Med, as key partner to the Cairo Water Week since its launch in 2018, co-organised and facilitated a day-event and two sessions, giving a strong message for enhanced focus on facilitating investments in the water sector, the role of gender in water diplomacy and mobilizing Young Professionals in the fight to meet the SDGs.

The Transboundary Freshwater Security Governance Train continues its journey on 19 October, with an 8th interactive session in the series. The topic for this event is the source-to-sea approach in international water law. It is jointly organised by GWP and Wuhan International Water Academy (IWLA) and it is part of the ongoing efforts to engage more with participants of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security.
