The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 was originally scheduled to take place in June 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was rescheduled and it is instead taking place this year on 3-11 September. It will be a hybrid in-person and virtual event, with the aim to drive action on nature-based recovery, climate change and biodiversity.
Covering a geographical area of 20,361 km2 connecting 5 countries and 5 water bodies, the Drin Basin in Southeast Europe sustains unique ecosystems and endemic biodiversity, while supporting the economic activity of over 1.6 million people who call it home. Development partners in the Water and Sanitation sector in Malawi have bemoaned the financial gap that is hampering access to clean water. Data by Malawi’s National Statistics Office shows that 14% of Malawians, about 2.6 million people, do not have access to safe water, and about 27% of the population walk for over an hour to access safe water.
“Back in 1991, as a fresh Ph.D. holder in Environmental Biology from the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, India, I never had a dearth of opportunities to work as a scientist. However, I was keen to use my skills and knowledge for practical applications for betterment of community. With this idea, I started my career as a Woman Programme Manager for watershed management with a Non-Government Organization (NGO) at Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India.” Dr Veena Khanduri, Executive Secretary-cum-Country Coordinator of India Water Partnership (GWP India) shares the story of her career journey in celebration of International Women's Day (IWD2020).
