In the face of profound global water challenges, on World Water Day 2018 five global multi-stakeholder partnerships representing business, governments, intergovernmental organisations, academia, and civil society organisations announced a new collaboration effort designed to accelerate progress toward ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation around the world. Gender mainstreaming is a priority and a critical cross cutting issue required for achieving the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) goals and objectives.

The crucial role of water ecosystems -and especially coastal wetlands- in Middle East & North Africa (MENA) and the policy options on how to best protect and valorize them through a Nexus approach were discussed at a session co-convened by the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med) and Wetlands International during the recent World Water Week in Stockholm (27-31 August 2018).

The annual GWP Network Meeting will be held on 11 October at 13.00 Central European Time (CET). Since 2013, GWPEA has been organizing annual regional media workshops aimed at building the capacity of media practitioners in IWRM and sensitizing them on their crucial role in covering water, climate and drought related topics.

In 2017, water distress increased in Mali, a situation which alerted the Water Management Commission of the Sélingué reservoir and Markala dam (CGESM) to convene a third meeting since the beginning of 2018. This was on Wednesday 21 February 2018 in Ségou, at the direction of the Office du Niger.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria House of Representatives committee on Water Resources engaged stakeholders and the general public in a two-day public hearing (17 and 18 October 21017) on "a bill for an act to establish a regulatory framework for the Water Resources sector in Nigeria".

Floods are a recurrent natural calamity in Pakistan, followed by earthquakes, cyclones and drought. However, drought is more damaging than floods in terms of food insecurity. Evidence of chronic water shortages have been painfully evident in some parts of Pakistan in recent years, due to low rainfall and extreme variations in temperature.

GWP representatives are at the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, taking place 16-26 May. The focus is on GWP support for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, specifically in relation to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from countries, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes, South-South Cooperation, and financing. On Thursday 19 May GWP is co-organising a high level side event together with the Government of Morocco, the UNFCCC Secretariat Adaptation Programme, and GIZ.
