SDG 6.5.1 monitoring activity in West Africa

The SDG 6.5.1 monitoring process started in the region where UNEP-DHI through GWP is bringing financial and technical assistance to 7 countries out the 15 ECOWAS member states to facilitate the data collection and reporting process.

GWP-WA is progressing on PREE/IUCN activities implementation

During the last months the Executive Secretariat coordinated the field missions carried out by the consultants of the AGRISTUDIO/ID SAHEL consortium in 4 Fouta Djalon countries from November 16 to December 04, 2021. The consultants’ firm had submitted their start-up report of the mission on the realization of a prospective diagnosis of the Fouta Djallon massif with the analysis of the opportunities and the proposal of the options/priorities of restoration of the degraded ecosystems of the Massif. This report was validated after some amendments by GWP-WA.

Phase II of the Nexus Assessment in the Drina river basin is launched

The ad-hoc Steering Committee for the Nexus activities in the Drina River Basin under the SEE Nexus Project, supported by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), had its first online meeting on 15 October 2020. Representatives from the Ministries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia relevant to the water, energy and environment sectors, were informed about and commented on the project’s objectives and planned activities in the basin.

Benin Environment and Education Society (BEES)

Maximin Djondo is the Executive Director of Benin Environment and Education Society (BEES). For the past 15 years, he has implemented projects in the West Africa region to support national and international strategies and policies related to the sustainable use of wetland and coastal ecosystems resources. Beneficiaries informed and engaged to take up the Mekrou phase 2 Niger activities in local plans

GWP-WA chair, Prof. Amadou Hama MAIGA and Executive Secretary, M. Armand HOUANYE made a working visit in Niamey, Niger from 9 to 13 November 2020 to inform project stakeholders, exchange with partners on the priorities and next steps in the implementation of project, discuss potential synergies to be developed in the implementation of the project and other ongoing and future initiatives in Niger and the sub-region and develop a roadmap for the strengthening of the governance of the Country Water Partnership of Niger.

GWP trains over thirty journalists in the Central African Republic on water security, climate resilience, and the role of the media in IWRM communications

To strengthen journalists understanding of water security and climate resilience for effective communication with stakeholders, the Central Africa Republic Country Water Partnership (PNE-RCA), with the technical and financial support of the GWP Central Africa (GWP-CAF) and UNICEF, organized a two day capacity building workshop for media professionals in Bangui in December 2019. The participants at the workshop expressed their gratitude for the initiative and committed to contribute to the sensitization of stakeholders on water security and climate resilience. They also made a series of recommendations to key stakeholders, on enhancing water security and climate resilience. Steps have since been taken by PNE-RCA to implement the recommendations made towards the establishment of a network of water and climate journalists, and plans have been made to sustain it through subsequent capacity building workshops.
