The case study was developed as part of the global Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) that was formally introduced in 2014 in the Southeast Asia Region, and finalized by the second quarter of 2018.

As one of the GWP-SEA country members, Malaysia Water Partnership has been committed to supporting the implementation of WACDEP. Several activities were carried out to support the country’s commitment to addressing the issues of floods and climate change resilience. One of the activities during the first phase of WACDEP is ‘Community flood-proofing and adaptation for climate resilience’ that was done through the demonstration project. A mission was organized to assess the capacities and needs of national structures for flood and drought forecasting and warning in order to develop integrated, tailored, sustainable and basin-wide solutions to enhance resilience to climate change at local, national and regional levels.

In one of its key activities at COP25, GWP announced a new collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other partners, to create plausible water solutions for a climate-resilient future in 2030 and beyond. The initiative is called "Water Resilience Frontiers: Pathways for transformational Climate Resilient Water Security in 2030 and Beyond".

On 18 June, GWP organised a webinar as a follow-up to the “Project Preparation Workshop for Transformational Climate Resilient Water Project Concept for Asia” – held in October last year. The objective was to create a Communities of Practice around the topic.

In a long-anticipated event, the UN’s High Level Political Forum (HLPF) met in New York in July, to review progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, including, for the first time, the one dedicated to water, SDG 6. A GWP delegation was present, communicating key messages from its global network of 3,000-plus partners.

The governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe have signed an Agreement on Co-operation on the Development, Management and Sustainable Utilization of the Water Resources of the Buzi Watercourse. The Agreement signed on 29th July, in Mutare, Zimbabwe by the ministers responsible for water will enhance cooperation between the two countries and the region as a whole

GWP WA is collaborating with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to support the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) to integrate flood and drought management and develop early warning for its climate change adaptation measures.

How well is the world managing its water resources? To answer that question, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with the UNEP-DHI Centre and Global Water Partnership (GWP), have analysed the responses from 186 countries to the survey instrument on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 6.5.1 – the degree of implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) – showing that the world as a whole has advanced from 49% in 2017 to 54% in 2020. While this does show definite progress, 107 countries are currently not on track to meet the target of implementing IWRM by 2030, and to reach the global goal, the current rate of implementation would need to at least double.

From October 12 GWP-WA Secretariat has a new staff. The recruitment process of the WACDEP-G programme manager was concluded by the recruitment Mr. Joseph Yaovi KOGBE, as the Regional Program Officer of AIP WACDEP-G West Africa.

Africa's population is projected to reach 1.6 billion by 2030, which translates into a need to produce at least 50% more food; and at least a tenfold increase in water needs for energy production to support socio-economic development. These challenges and the resultant increase in water demand are further aggravated by rapid urbanization and industrialisation. This requires huge investments in water to satisfy the social and economic demands among other things.
