Achieving SDGs in a changing climate will require governments, societies and the private sector to change the way they use and manage water.
To accelerate this transformation, Member States of the African Union will implement the AIP as a vehicle to cultivate the leadership required to champion a comprehensive, inclusive and collaborative way of developing and managing water resources and improving water and sanitation related challenges.
Recent droughts and floods in Southern Africa region have served as a reminder that a silo approach to planning and investing in water security is no longer suitable due to changing climate and pressure on natural resources.
Global climate is changing at an unprecedented rate and necessity of global political awareness that decisive action addressing climate change has risen over the last decades, but has often not translated into adaptation action. Especially the populations of global river deltas and coastal zones are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change occurring due to rising sea levels, increased magnitude and frequency of storms, flooding and salinisation. The Global Water Partnership has partnered with NEPAD Agency, the AUC, and the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) to formulate the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) Water support initiative Project (2019-2024). The project aims to accelerate the preparation and financing of transboundary water projects and foster a water-food-energy nexus approach in the development of hydropower projects.
