During a ceremony held at GWP / WA the Mékrou Project manager, Mr. Corneille AHOUANSOU who resigned handed over to the Executive Secretary of GWP West Africa, Mr DAM MOGBANTE and received regards from his former colleagues. The chair of the CWP Burkina and two of his colleagues, the Permanent Secretary of the CWP Niger, Mr Radji GARBA who will support the ES in the technical implementation of the Project to completion and GWP / WA staff were in attendance.

2017 marks the 2nd year that a dedicated MENA Regional Focus is part of the Stockholm World Water Weeks’ programme, alongside the regional days for Africa, Asia and Latin America. The overall coordination of the MENA Focus has been entrusted to GWP-Med that works closely with key regional partners, each leading targeted sessions, to ensure that the region’s priorities are duly reflected in the Water Week’s programme.

GWP West Africa new Executive Secretary Armand HOUANYE was officially introduced by the former one Dam MOGBANTE to the Director General of water resources (DGRE) of Burkina Faso, Mr. Serge TRAORE, on 21 November 2017.

GWPSA joined other key stakeholders working around climate change adaptation at a regional workshop on Climate Change National Adaptation Plans for African Anglophone countries. The workshop, which was held in Lilongwe, Malawi from 27 February-3 March 2017, was organised by the UNFCCC LEG and was attended by about 50 participants from 25 Anglophone African countries. The regional training was officially opened by the Chief Director for Environment and Climate Change Management, Dr. Yanira Ntupanyama, Malawi. Remarks were also given from UNFCCC (Dr. Paul Desanker, Manager of NAPs and Policies, and LDCs Expert Group (LEG) Chairman, Mr. Abias Huongo-Angola.

A far-reaching political and technical process towards establishing a joint vision for water security in the Mediterranean towards 2030 and beyond is on-going in the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). It draws on integrated responses, focusing on the feasible and the tangible. Building trust among countries and stakeholders, it aims at linking capacities and financial resources towards addressing needs. GWP-Med contributes to the UfM process servicing as its technical facilitator.

Since 2013, GWPEA has been organizing annual regional media workshops aimed at building the capacity of media practitioners in IWRM and sensitizing them on their crucial role in covering water, climate and drought related topics.

After the June training in Niamey on the L-Moments model and hydrological modelling, the national experts of scientific and research institutions from the three Mekrou countries (Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger) gathered in Ouagadougou from 20 to 23 September 2017 for a training on the mathematical model Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC) and the multiobjective optimization (MOO).

Nine (9) countries across Africa among which four (4) are from West Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria) met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 18-19 May to take a step further on the national consultations carried out in 2015 that led-up to the UN Committee on Food Security’s (UN CFS) 42^nd session.
