Benin has taken an important step in its efforts to prevent, protect and manage the consequences of climate change that could affect the population in the short, medium and long term. Benin's National Assembly adopted the country's national legislation on 18 June 2018 to: (i) combat climate change and its negative effects and consequences and increase the resilience of living communities (ii) support effective response, adaptation and mitigation measures by setting specific targets for sustainable economic and social development, security and energy efficiency, in accordance with the specific provisions of national and international legal instruments on climate change.

“Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality” is the global theme for International Women’s Day 2017. It asks governments to make national commitments to address the challenges that are holding women and girls back from reaching their full potential.

Vientiane, 24 October 2018 -- The Mekong River Commission (MRC), Global Water Partnership Southeast Asia (GWP SEA), and US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) successfully organized a regional shared vision and collaborative modelling workshop for the Mekong River Basin. Integrated planning of water, food and energy sectors and promoting regional cooperation has been considered as a strategy to meet water, energy and food security targets, and to improve natural resource use efficiency in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Achieving SDGs in a changing climate will require governments, societies and the private sector to change the way they use and manage water. To accelerate this transformation, Member States of the African Union will implement the AIP as a vehicle to cultivate the leadership required to champion a comprehensive, inclusive and collaborative way of developing and managing water resources and improving water and sanitation related challenges.

A far-reaching political and technical process towards establishing a joint vision for water security in the Mediterranean towards 2030 and beyond is on-going in the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). It draws on integrated responses, focusing on the feasible and the tangible. Building trust among countries and stakeholders, it aims at linking capacities and financial resources towards addressing needs. GWP-Med contributes to the UfM process servicing as its technical facilitator.

The final preparation meeting of the lead partners for the Africa Regional Process to the Eighth World Water Forum and the High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) Africa Legacy Initiative- “African Water Investment Program (AIP) was recently held in Pretoria, South Africa.

As part of Stage 1 of the SDG IWRM Support Programme (SDG 6-SP), the initiative has already advanced the SDG reporting process in more than 30 countries. Together with UN Environment-DHI, the custodian agency of SDG 6.5.1, GWP has convened 34 workshops to collect the official country data for 6.5.1. (Integrated Water Resources Management, IWRM).
