The Volta Flood and Drought Management (VFDM) project is drawing to a close after four (04) years of implementing activities in the six (06) countries of the basin. The Pungwe River basin, shared by Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is rich in plant and animal diversity. However, the ecosystem is now under threat from human activities. In 2023, Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) commissioned an Environmental Flow (EFlows) assessment to understand how the Pungwe River Basin and its ecosystems work, the findings of which will help in managing the river and protecting its natural environment.

The Global Water Leadership Program-Rwanda launched a response strategy aims at strengthening water resilience in Rwanda in the event held on 22 March 2024 at Radisson Blu Kigali. This event, coincided with the celebration of the 2024 World Water Day themed “Leveraging Water for Peace and Prosperity” brought together representatives from various government institutions, international organizations, regional and national institutions.
17 June is the UN World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, also called Desertification and Drought Day (DDD). To mark the day, UNCCD, EOTEC DevNet, and GWP are co-organising a webinar on 18 June focused on showcasing collaborative approaches to tackling drought challenges. This webinar entitled, "United for Earth: Collaborative Strategies Against Drought” represents a crucial step in our collective efforts to combat land degradation and enhance resilience in drought-affected regions.
At the 1st Mediterranean Green Week, co-organised by the Union for the Mediterranean and the OECD in Istanbul, the key role of the WEFE Nexus approach in tackling major Mediterranean challenges was highlighted, especially through partnerships such as the joint efforts under the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme in promoting environmental security and building resilience against climate change.
