AFCIA Mali, flood risk/impact mapping and implementation of hydrological models in the commune of Koula/ cercle of Koulikoro

The stakeholders in the implementation of the project "Real-time mapping of flood risk in Mali based on rainfall forecasts, remote sensing and deep learning" met on 06 February 2025 to validate the report on the outcome of the mission to map the risk/impact of flooding and implement hydrological models in the commune of Koula in the Koulikoro district of Mali. The meeting brought together stakeholders from Mali in the conference room of the National Directorate of Hydraulics (DNH), as well as regional and GWP-AO experts online.

Drought Management and Biodiversity Conservation

Drought resilience and biodiversity conservation are closely interlinked. Conservation efforts that protect and restore biodiversity help maintain ecosystem services, such as water retention and soil health, which are crucial for mitigating the impacts of drought. Healthy and diverse ecosystems can also withstand and recover from droughts more easily. Thus, preserving biodiversity strengthens ecosystems’ natural ability to endure drought conditions and enhances long-term sustainability.

Cyclone Ditwa Leaves Sri Lanka in Crisis

2 December 2025; Sri Lanka is reeling from the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwa, which swept northward across the island beginning 28 November. Torrential rains exceeding 300 mm and winds up to 70 km/h triggered landslides, floods, and widespread destruction across Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Western, North Eastern, and Eastern Provinces.
