Mali CWP holds extraordinary partners’ meeting

The Country Water Partnership (CWP) of Mali held an extraordinary meeting of its partners on 27 January 2018 to review its basic texts (Statutes and regulations). The main changes are that the permanent secretary who was elected is now giving place to a recruited Executive secretary and is heading a secretariat that may include recruited personnel for projects and programmes.

Stronger together: building content and countries’ trust for the future Mediterranean water agenda

A far-reaching political and technical process towards establishing a joint vision for water security in the Mediterranean towards 2030 and beyond is on-going in the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). It draws on integrated responses, focusing on the feasible and the tangible. Building trust among countries and stakeholders, it aims at linking capacities and financial resources towards addressing needs. GWP-Med contributes to the UfM process servicing as its technical facilitator.

GWP China WACDEP

The GWP China WACDEP aims to integrate water security and climate resilience in development planning processes, build climate resilience and support provinces to adapt to a new climate regime through increased investments in water security.

Capacity Building (B4)

Capacity building – at the individual, institutional, and societal levels – is an important means to further IWRM principles and boost the overall quality of water governance structures. Capacity building essentially stands for a twofold process: (1) it is about understanding the obstacles that prevent the people, the organisations, or any other elements of an institutional framework from fully realizing their development goals; and (2) it is also concerned with finding the applicable mechanisms in overcoming these challenges and ultimately achieving better and more sustainable results.

New youth portal for climate change campaign

Last year a group of youth from more than 20 countries started a global initiative where they produced a white paper in the lead up to COP21, which allowed for a Youth Commitment under the Lima-Paris Action Agenda. GWP and partners are now taking the next step in launching a new portal, where voices of young people will be gathered in one place. The portal is launched on World Water Day, 22 March.

WACDEP launched in Sao Tome and Principe

GWP Central Africa launched the Water, Climate and Development Program (WACDEP) in Sao Tome and Principe. The workshop was held on 4 July 2017 in the UNDP conference room and brought together some 40 people.

Background

In June 2017, the Government of the Republic of South Africa, under the aegis of the High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) commissioned the Global Water Partnership (GWP) to develop a legacy initiative of the HLPW in Africa. In response, the Africa Water Investment Programme (AIP) was developed by GWP in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) and the HLPW Secretariat at the World Bank/UN.
