On Wednesday 22nd March, 2017, GWPSA’s Executive Secretary and Head of Africa Coordination Unit, Mr. Alex Simalabwi, together with GWPSA programme staff attended the United Nations World Water Day Summit and Expo in Durban, South Africa to mark the 2017 World Water Day global celebrations under the theme “Wastewater”. The summit and expo were hosted by the Department of Water and Sanitation, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and UN Water.

In Shaanxi Province, groundwater is a critical source of fresh drinking water for the local citizens and also supplying for the irrigated agriculture. Groundwater is also important in sustaining streams, lakes, wetlands and associated ecosystems. In the meantime, climate change affects ground water resources and is closely linked to other global change drivers, including population growth, urbanization and land-use change, coupled with other socio-economic trends.

GWP SAS held a Sub Regional Coordination Meeting leading to 8th World Water Forum in Brasilia back-to-back with the Annual Regional Council meeting on 29 October 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

2016 marks 20 years since Global Water Partnership began its commitment to help governments take a cross-sectoral approach to water resources management.

Lebanon and Jordan are exploring the possibility of joining the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). To assist the two countries in this process, UNECE and the Global Water Partnership - Mediterranean (GWP-Med), with financial support provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), have organised national workshops to increase awareness and understanding of relevant stakeholders of the different legal and institutional frameworks for cooperation on shared waters resources, the specificities of the UNECE Water Convention, in comparison to the UN Watercourses Convention, as well as the complementarity of the two agreements.

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) staff in Zimbabwe attended World Water Day commemorations organised by Mukuvisi Woodlands Nature Reserve and Environment Centre incorporating the Eco Schools Environment Education Programme. The event was funded by the 3^rd European Union Water Facility Programme in Zimbabwe and  was held at Darwendale/Manyame Dam on the 25^th of March 2015. Apart from GWP, the event attracted 449 children and 74 teachers from 27 schools and 13 other organisations which included  the European Union (EU),Environment Africa (EA), Wildlife Conservation, Practical Action, Upper Manyame Sub Catchment Council (UMSCC) and National Parks.

“Water, gender and development are closely interconnected, and GWP realizes this fully. We think that water empowers women, and empowered women transform their societies.” These are the words of GWP Interim Chair Alice Bouman-Dentener on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2016 (#IWD2016). Alongside her, some of the remarkable women in the GWP network speak up - about their journey to become successful in their professions, how to overcome obstacles they face as women, and also recommendations to other women.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe has interviewed women in the water community across the Network on their journey to become successful in their professions, how to overcome obstacles they face as women, and also recommendations to other women. 

Greywater recycling aims at advancing the use of cost-effective and replicable practices, to ensure water availability and address water scarcity challenges at a local level.
