The 2023 United Nations Water Conference was successfully held from 22-24 March 2023. The event was held at UN Headquarters in New York, co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, aimed to assess the progress of the Water Action Decade 2018-2028 and reaffirm water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The mission of the Global Water Partnership to support countries in the adoption and implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular Agenda 6.5.1 to track the degree of IWRM. Thus, the global office and the regional secretariat of Southeast Asia participated in the main events, and side events (on-site and virtual events).
African leaders have pledged to mobilise USD 30bn per year by 2030 to achieve water security and sustainable sanitation on the continent through institutional private-public partnerships, sector reform, and higher national budget allocations.

This conference, marking the 11th anniversary of the launch of IDMP by GWP and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), served as a critical milestone in the global conversation on drought and water scarcity. It highlighted the pressing need for unprecedented collaboration to address the escalating threat of drought and water scarcity worldwide.

The 2024 theme, Planet vs. Plastics, revolves around the idea of building a plastic-free planet for generations to come.
The Pungwe River basin, shared by Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is rich in plant and animal diversity. However, the ecosystem is now under threat from human activities. In 2023, Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) commissioned an Environmental Flow (EFlows) assessment to understand how the Pungwe River Basin and its ecosystems work, the findings of which will help in managing the river and protecting its natural environment.
