GWP Eastern Africa showcased Water, Climate Development Program (WACDEP) in the the 3nd Annual Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-III), which took place in Ethiopia's capital Addis-Ababa from 20-24th October 2013.
Our approach is hinged on two mutually objectives: delivering GWP strategy in the region and responding to water and climate resilience needs and contexts at all levels in the Eastern and Greater Horn of Africa.
The Municipality of Talcahuano because of rapid urbanisation is subjected to natural resource degradation. Action was taken and a municipal strategy was created, assigning the municipality as the institution in charge of administering and combating natural resource degradation. This case illustrates the appropriateness of the municipal level of government in successfully addressing the recovery of water resources and environmental management.
The city of Jabalpur experienced water shortages. Action was taken through a scheme, which would augment the water supply to the city, by substantially increasing funding. The key lesson is how an empowered local body can respond to water challenges in a successful manner.
The national reserve Sur is deteriorating. Action has been taken by NGOs to initiate a project to restore water conditions in the reserve, including the interplay between water and soil. Despite the projects importance, it failed to be implemented due to conflicts with national authorities. This case illustrates the danger of EU initiatives being implemented without an active public involvement since this creates risks of low acceptance of local communities and land owners.
