2014 China GWP Toolbox Workshop for University Water Education

On September 22 and 23, 2014, the 2014 China GWP Toolbox Workshop for University Water Education sponsored by the GWPO and GWP China was organized by Hohai University.

In the Workshop there were 40 participants, including the professors and lecturers from the Tsinghua University, Hohai University, Yangzhou University, North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Chang’an University, Dalian University of Technology, Zhejiang University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Changsha University of Science & Technology, Xi’an University of Technology and Wuhan University as well as some domestic and international undergraduates of Hohai University. Danka Thalmeinerova, Senior Knowledge Officer, James Gunya Kenge, Knowledge Officer and Angela Klaeuschen, Senior Network Officer from GWPO, Zheng Rugang, Coordinator, Wu Juan, Administration Officer and Ma Yilin, Communication Officer from GWP China were present at the Workshop.

At the two-day Workshop, Mr. Zheng introduced to the participants the GWP China activities and Danka presented the knowledge management in GWP and evolution of toolbox. Afterwards, the presentations related to water education including the IWRM concept and application experiences in Chinese universities were delivered by the invited professors and lecturers. Danka raised the topics for further work, including how to incorporate the IWRM into the water education in universities, and what is the main issues and the critical problems in the region, like “IWRM in China—water and food security, technical paper, how to incorporate the IWRM in China” etc.

In the free discussion after the presentations, the invited lecturers and professors said that the education and training on IWRM are not sufficient in China’s universities although some universities have developed some related courses. They expressed the wish that GWP introduced more IWRM cases to the Chinese universities. And this workshop was the beginning to promote the IWRM in the universities’ water education and also an efficient way to inform the lecturers and professors about the progress of the IWRM Toolbox.

In the summary of the workshop, Mr. Zheng, on behalf of GWP China, expressed his appreciation for the contribution of all participants. Even it was the first time to organize such event, he was pleased to witness that all lecturers, professors and students were totally engaged in developing more activities on water education in the universities. The lecturers and professors were also willing to contribute their experiences and cases to the database of the Toolbox to be shared with other regions and countries.
