“Although water is central to development, its value is often overlooked. It is thus essential that this national consultation helps to ensure that water is properly reflected in any post-2015 agenda. Moreover water is tied to most development themes – such as food, health, energy. So it is essential to recognize the obvious linkages with these other thematic consultations”

The second annual Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-II) is a key activity of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme which is organised jointly by the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). It provides a forum for dialogue and engagement with various stakeholders involved in climate and development in Africa. 

Following the WACDEP Africa Technical Coordination and Annual Programming Meeting which was held from the 15^th to the 17^th of September 2014 at Meikles Hotel, Harare, Zimbabwe a training workshop on Project Preparation and Financing was held from the 18^th to the 19^th September, 2014. The training workshop brought together 35 participants which included the WACDEP Africa Coordination Unit; WACDEP Project Preparation National Consultants, WACDEP Work Package 4 (WP 4) National and Regional Partner Institutions and WACDEP Country Programme Managers.

 

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has a unique global water information system, AQUASTAT, developed since 1993 by the Land and Water Division. The main objective of the programme is to systematically select the most reliable information on hydrological resources and water use in each country, as well as to make this information available in a standard format for interested global, regional and national users.

The National Consultation on Non Conventional Water Resources (NCWR) Management will be held on Tuesday, May 6th, at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Malta.

The 1^st Regional Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) labelled project “Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector” will be held on 28-30 October 2014, in Athens, Greece, in close collaboration with the EU funded “Sustainable Water Integrated Management - Support Mechanism” (SWIM-SM) project.

GWP Eastern Africa draws its annual action plans from GWP’s priorities as reflected in the strategy and local contexts and needs. Aligning global water and climate resilience aspirations as reflected in GWP’s strategic goals with regional, national and local needs through vertical and horizontal consultations (policy dialogue & community meetings) ensures effectiveness, responsiveness and coherence in terms of desired change in water resource resources management policies, practices and mindset at all levels.

Water governance remains a key challenge in the Mediterranean. Efforts of countries focus on improving policies making and action planning, institutional settings, law and regulation, enforcement mechanisms, innovative financing, application of cost recovery and polluter pays principle, etc. To achieve sustainable models of development, water must be mainstreamed into other sectoral policies such as agriculture, land planning and use, energy, industry, tourism and trade. Political will is key for making these happen. The importance of cross-cutting issues, such as gender, equity, poverty and rights, is increasingly recognized but is still relatively poorly tackled.
