Estonia: Viru and Peipsi Catchment Area Management Plan (#356)

Oil-shale mining and oil-shale based electricity production has caused serious damage to ground and surface water in the Viru-Peipsi catchment area in Estonia. Action was taken to enhance the protection of the water resources through a project that set out a management plan. The project included data collection, monitoring and capacity building. Due to the success of this project, it can be used as an example for future developments.

The Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council will spot light on the Mediterranean Cooperation as an instrument to ensure peace, stability and growth in our region.

Together with the European Territorial Cooperation Programme MED and the Neighborhood Cross-border Cooperation Programme in the Mediterranean Sea Basin ENPI MED, the Cyprus Presidency warmly invites you to the first joint conference of these two cooperation programmes to be held in Cyprus on October 24th and 25th 2012.

GWP Calls for Recommitment to IWRM Plans at Rio+20

Dr. Ania Grobicki, GWP Executive Secretary, speaking at a World Water Day press conference at the United Nations in New York, called on governments to recommit to IWRM and Water Efficiency Plans at the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012. Governments agreed to such Plans in Johannesburg, South Africa, known as the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Earth Summit 2002).
