The 2023 International Women’s Day (IWD) theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.” IWD is a Day that the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) values, as it provides one of many opportunities to celebrate the achievements of women in its network and to empower women and girls.
On 30 January, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and GWP organised an online peer-to-peer exhange on drought management in Latin America and the Caribbean, bringing together 250 experts, policy makers, and scientists from the region.
As a leading authority on water governance, GWP continued to put water at the centre of development at the UN 2023 Water Conference by participating in and leading over 30 events, committing pledges to the Water Action Agenda, and launching a sourcebook on managing multistakeholder partnerships to improve the global management of water resources. Drought poses a significant threat to food security across the region, given the pivotal role of agriculture in its economies. Moreover, water scarcity in Asia extends its repercussions beyond agriculture, impacting industries like manufacturing and energy production that heavily depend on water resources, thereby hindering overall economic growth and stability. Given the transboundary nature of drought, effective mitigation efforts demand collaborative actions across nations.
The planet is facing multiple challenges, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Haiti, as part of this region, is the most vulnerable country to climate change, according to the World Risk Index. Over the last 34 years, the country has suffered from the effects of droughts, floods, hurricanes, and more. These affect vulnerable communities, including women and girls, children, and youth.
The Global Water Leadership Program-Rwanda launched a response strategy aims at strengthening water resilience in Rwanda in the event held on 22 March 2024 at Radisson Blu Kigali. This event, coincided with the celebration of the 2024 World Water Day themed “Leveraging Water for Peace and Prosperity” brought together representatives from various government institutions, international organizations, regional and national institutions.
