The new national water policy has now been approved by the Government of India.
There are growing concerns about the potential effects of climate change on the socio-economic characteristics and natural resources of the Lower Mekong Basin. In response to the potential impacts of climate change, the Mekong River Commission has launched the regional Climate Change and Adaptation Initiative. Furthermore, a Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment has been conducted. The most important lesson learnt is that it is essential to establish a regional organisation to combat climate change.
This question was addressed by GWP Technical Committee Chair, Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi, who spoke at “Green Week”, the largest annual conference on European environment policy, in Brussels, in May 2011. His presentation “Water Security & Green Economy: links through IWRM” was given at the session on “The United Nations conference on sustainable development in 2012: Can it deliver on resource efficiency?”
In Vietnam, there are two kinds of RBO; 1) The Management Board of River basin Planning (MBRBP), established and managed by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in a period from 1999-2001 in compliance with Law on Water Resources 1998. 2) The Committee for Environmental Protection of River Basin (CEPRB), established and also managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) during the time 2009-2010.
One of the prerequisites to successful water resources management plans is the need for them to be gender sensitive. The Executive Secretary of GWP, Rudolph Cleveringa, says that GWP as a network needs to change: “We can’t use the same agenda as we did 20 years ago”. The idea of a Regional Climate Outlook Forum (RCOF) originated out of a workshop entitled “Reducing Climate-related Vulnerability” held in Southern Africa in October 1996. Almost a year later, towards the end of 1997, the first RCOF was held in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa where the idea was birthed.
Each year, the Global Water Partnership (GWP) holds its Consulting Partners (CP) Meeting, where it brings together all its Regional Water Partnerships (RWPs) and partners from more than 160 countries. The Meeting offers a consultative approach in which Partners recommend actions to be taken that are fundamental to the operation of the GWP network.
An innovative concept, spearheaded by GWP Botswana, has brought relief to schools.
