At the end of the West African Water Ministers Conference on IWRM (WAC/ IWRM) on 3 to 5 March 1998 in Ouagadougou, a consensus document called "Ouagadougou Declaration" was made public. It is considered as the commitment of ECOWAS for the implementation of IWRM in the region.
From 2007, the annual Southern African Development Community (SADC) Multi-Stakeholder Water Dialogues, organised by GWP Southern Africa on behalf of the SADC Water Division, have informed action plans at regional, river basin, national and local levels. Involving small water service providers (SWSPs) as partners in sustainable water service provision has undergone a major change. Prior to the efforts of GWP Philippines and its Partners, SWSPs were not formally recognised as government partners in achieving the MDG target on water service provision.
GWP Mediterranean, as the Secretariat of the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative (MED EUWI), has since since 2005 supported the efforts of the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water towards an Integrated Water Management Planning in the country. The new GWP Gender Strategy was formally launched at a well-attended event at Stockholm World Water Week 2014 on 3 September.
