Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) face greater challenges in ensuring water security for all and by all. Although LAC is a water-abundant region, water is not easily and equally available to all citizens and users. Water in the region is often found in rural and natural areas, while the most populated urban areas report water stress levels above 80% for periods ranging from 3 to 12 months per year.
Four co-chairs of the International High-Level Panel on Water Investments for Africa; H.E Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and Chair of the African Union, H.E Hage Geingob, President of Namibia, H.E Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands and H.E Jakaya Kikwete, Former President of the Republic of Tanzania have each received the Presidential Global Changemakers Award for demonstrating high level political commitment and leadership for climate resilient water security in Africa.
The governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe have established a tri-basin institution to manage the Buzi, Pungwe, and Save River Basins’ water resources, which have, over the years, suffered from extreme climate effects such as floods, droughts, and cyclones.
The SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme assists governments in designing and implementing their responses to SDG indicator 6.5.1, the degree of implementation of IWRM, to accelerate progress towards the achievement of water-related SDGs and other development goals. This directly supports the official SDG monitoring and reporting processes, leading to measurable progress on the relevant SDG targets. The Support Programme is structured around 3 stages and offers also specific support on selected thematic priorities.
GWP SAS, in collaboration with South Asia Rainwater Network (SARNET), Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) and Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) jointly organised a webinar on Rainwater harvesting for disaster risk reduction in flood and drought crises on 3 August 2023. This is part of the “Signposts to Bali” initiative, a deliberation of WfWP for the preparation for the 10th World Water Forum.
