Invitation to Webinars on Valuing Water in Latin America and the Caribbean

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) face greater challenges in ensuring water security for all and by all. Although LAC is a water-abundant region, water is not easily and equally available to all citizens and users. Water in the region is often found in rural and natural areas, while the most populated urban areas report water stress levels above 80% for periods ranging from 3 to 12 months per year.

This situation has triggered several conflicts, as various sectors are competing over the same resources. Sanitation service levels in the region, on the other hand, are still low. Ensuring a water secure region requires a systems change in the way water is understood, valued and managed for the varied and irreplaceable economic, social and environmental benefits it provides.

Achieving  SDG 6 and other water-related targets requires commitments from all nations, sectors, industries and stakeholders to accelerate implementation of diverse solutions that can be replicated and scaled up in the years to come. The Valuing Water Principles (VWP) stand ready to support this systems change.

The Valuing Water Initiative (VWI) is collaborating with the UN Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in the third edition of the Regional Water Dialogues (January 11th – 12th, 2023), triggered by the UN 2023 Water Conference and the Water Action Agenda. A main objective of the Water Dialogue is to communicate and consolidate commitments made to accelerate the achievement of SDG 6 in LAC based on a sustainable and inclusive water transition.

In this setting, the VWI with the support of Deltares and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) is organising a series of webinars focused on introducing the VWP and exchanging knowledge and experiences on how these can be applied in LAC, and in particular how these can strengthen the consolidation of commitments ahead of the UN 2023 Water conference, to be held in New York in March next year.
