The Mekrou Project Pase 2 participates in the operationalization of the National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (PANGIRE) of Niger, in the Niger portion of the Mekrou sub-basin, whose development objective in connection with its implementation is to promote socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and improvement of the resilience of human and natural systems to climate change.
The Department of Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment (DAREN) and the ECOWAS Commission in collaboration with the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA), the African Network of Basin Organizations (ANBO); the Secretariat of the Convention for the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (UNECE) organized a regional workshop on the theme "Operationalization of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at the river basin level in West Africa: approaches, achievements, challenges and good practices'', from November 30 to December 03, 2021, both face to face in Ouagadougou with virtual participation of partners in the countries.
The 9th session of the meeting of the Parties to the UN Water Convention was organized from 29 September to 1 October 2021. On this occasion, GWP-Med had the opportunity to present the breath of its work on transboundary water management, the water-energy-food-ecosystems Nexus approach as well as the role of women in promoting transboundary water cooperation, during the MOP9 meeting and in several side events.
GWP-WA chair, Prof. Amadou Hama MAIGA and Executive Secretary, M. Armand HOUANYE made a working visit in Niamey, Niger from 9 to 13 November 2020 to inform project stakeholders, exchange with partners on the priorities and next steps in the implementation of project, discuss potential synergies to be developed in the implementation of the project and other ongoing and future initiatives in Niger and the sub-region and develop a roadmap for the strengthening of the governance of the Country Water Partnership of Niger.
The following address was given by HE Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Chair: Global Water Partnership Africa Coordination Unit, at the closing ceremony of the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal on 25 March 2022. The address followed the formal announcement of the International High-Level Panel on Water Investment for Africa by HE Macky Sall, President of Senegel, at the same event.
In spite of the health crisis related to the spread of Covid 19, GWP-WA and its partners in Niger have committed themselves to the implementation of the project kick-off activities with the recruitment of the Project Management Unit staff and the setting up of the tools for the operational implementation of the project.
The 5th Steering Committee meeting of the Regional Program for the integrated Development of the Fouta Djallon Highlands (RPID/FDH) was held in Dakar, Senegal from 22 to 25 June 2021. The workshop was organized by FAO in collaboration with ECOWAS and UN Environment.
