Covering a geographical area of 20,361 km2 connecting 5 countries and 5 water bodies, the Drin Basin in Southeast Europe sustains unique ecosystems and endemic biodiversity, while supporting the economic activity of over 1.6 million people who call it home. However, four transboundary problems - deterioration of water quality, variability of hydrological regime, biodiversity degradation and disturbance of the natural sediment transport regime - are threatening the basin’s health with a direct impact on both the environment and livelihoods.
Participants in the 1st Multi-Stakeholders Consultation Meeting on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus organised on the framework of the "GEF/UNEP MedProgramme: Enhancing Environmental Security", acknowledged the need for a better integration of approaches related to the four sectors, including through the establishment of a systematic dialogue among the relevant actors.
Work on revising Law No. 2008-005 of 30 May 2008, the framework law on the environment in Togo, is continuing with the organisation of two regional workshops in Kara and Atakpamé to share the current provisional version of the framework law on the environment and have it amended by local stakeholders.
The Togo's Country Water Partnership (CWP) was set up in November 2006. Since its creation, this CWP has never been able to evolve well despite an apparently favorable environment to its development. The authorities and stakeholders in the institutional landscape of the water sector have been calling for the revitalization of the platform and the relaunching of its activities in order to contribute to finding solutions to strategic issues related to water management at different levels in Togo.
GWP-WA and CWP Benin organized together with the Executive Directorate of the Volta Basin Authority (VBA), the Ministry of Living Environment and Sustainable Development (MCVDD) of Benin through the General Directorate of the National Environment and Climate Fund (FNEC) and the Directorate General for the Environment and Climate (DGEC) as well as the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEE) through the General Directorate of Water (DGEau) of Benin the workshop for the operational planning and follow-up of the implementation of the WACDEP-G activities in Benin and at regional level for 2021.
This CAE, set up in May 2022 as part of the activities of the Mekrou Phase 2 Niger Project financed by the European Union through the European Union in Niger, covers the regions of Dosso and Tillabéri and the three communes of Falmey, Kirtachi and Tamou.
On Thursday, November 03, 2022, the Platform for the Coordination of Civil Society Organizations on Water and Sanitation in Senegal (POSCEAS) organized a general assembly for the renewal of the Platform's coordination board. It took place at the documentation center of ENDA Tiers Monde located on Cheikh Anta Diop Avenue.
The "WATER IS IN OUR HANDS" initiative, by FINISH and GWP-Med, aims to raise awareness on water saving, by showcasing practical ways to use water more efficiently.
