On July 1, 2016, Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren assumes the role of new Chair of the Global Water Partnership (GWP): "I think those who set up GWP 20 years ago - the people, organisations, governments - were very visionary and had good foresight. It is only more recently that water and water governance gained wider understanding and support”. Dr. Oyun says that now is a crucial time for GWP to influence the global development agenda. 

With the start of the activities of the Project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin", a project implementation team is assessing the capacities and needs of national structures for flood and drought forecasting and warning.

The Benin Youth Parliament for Water established on April 2, 2015, had its first general meeting to take stock of their activities of the first year, to evaluate the implementation of the 2015-2016 work plan, and then develop the plan for 2016-2017.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has invited leaders to New York on 23 September for one week to boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. GWP will be present during the week and is calling on its network to participate in the climate strikes.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, with support from Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), is convening a Regional Workshop on the Regional Water Energy Food (WEF) Nexus Framework and testing the SADC WEF Nexus Investment Project Screening Tool. The workshop is held in Johannesburg, South Africa on 17-18 September 2019.

Chad's Country Water Partnership was established in October 2017. Its mission is to support the Chadian government in the sustainable management of water resources and to contribute to promoting sustainable development through integrated water resources management in Chad, particularly at the country and river basin levels.

For effective implementation of the Lake Chad Basin Water Charter, the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) Executive Secretariat is organising a capacity building workshop on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for its experts, managers and representative of member states from the 16th to the 19th September 2019, in Ndjamena, Chad.

GWPSA’s technical team participated at the World Water Week in Stockholm from 28^th August – 2^nd September, 2016. Under the theme, Water for Sustainable Growth, the team participated in a number of sessions contributing to the solutions to the most pressing water-related challenges of today. Created in 2008 in Bangui, the CAR Country Water Partnership's mission is to support the government in the sustainable management of water resources through the adoption of IWRM principles. It brings together all the actors in the water sector, organised in groups of actors, who subscribe to the management and working principles promoted by the GWP network.
