Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security – a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

GWP, GEF IW:Learn and Partners have opened a MOOC on “Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security.” The aim is to bring together countries that share freshwater resources – giving them the skills to cooperate so that the shared resource is managed sustainably for the benefit of each country’s population. The self-paced MOOC is available on the SDG Academy platform - it is free and open to everyone - but especially designed for professionals who manage and make decisions about transboundary waters in ministries and river basin organisations, as well as young professionals and future leaders in transboundary waters, including undergraduate and graduate students.

Gender mainstreaming remains the principal tool for achieving gender equality and for redistributing power and influence in the Nexus sectors in the Drin Riparians

During an online workshop covering the issues of Gender in natural resources management in the Drin River basin, participants agreed that sustainable development and gender equality areinseperable. However, it was acknowledged that water management and the nexus water-food-energy-ecosystems remain largely a masculine domain. It was finally agreed that for a meaningful analysis and gender-sensitive policy making, institutions and a statistical system that provide gender disaggregated data are needed.

Six New Members Join GWP Steering Committee

In December 2020, GWP welcomed six new members on its Steering Committee, adding to seven members who have served longer. The Committee acts as a Board of Directors for the GWP Network and the GWP Organisation (GWPO). The members rotate every three or six years. Now, for the first time, a Permanent Youth Seat has been added. Jamilla Sealy from Barbados is the new representative on this seat. “Being the first youth, and also being a female of African descent and from the Caribbean, which are often under-represented in the global sphere, makes it a humbling experience”, she says about her appointment.

GWP Appoints New Executive Secretary

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) Steering Committee announced the appointment of Mr Darío Soto-Abril (pictured) as GWP Executive Secretary, effective March 1, 2021. Soto-Abril joins GWP after serving as Global CEO at Fairtrade International since February 2017.
