Turning Transboundary Challenges into Opportunities

The 9th session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP9) to the UN Water Convention concluded on 1 October after a week of sessions, all serving to review and propose action towards transboundary water cooperation. GWP Executive Secretary Darío Soto-Abril was a panelist in a high-level session on the theme of 'Water and Peace'. One of his key messages was on the importance of turning challenges into opportunities.

The GWP-CAf joined the 2nd "Follow the sun" experience

This year, the GWP network repeated the "Follow the Sun" experience, an online partner network meeting, after the success of last year. From 25th to 26th June 2019, all GWP regions were given the opportunity to express their views on the new GWP 2020-2025 strategy, for which they actively participated in the development.

Interactive Online Session: International Water Law and Dispute Settlement

Back by popular demand, the Transboundary Freshwater Security Governance Train starts its ‘Season 2’ in September 2021. This series of online engagement sessions follow a ‘train-like’ approach, stopping at various locations around the world and focusing on topics related to transboundary freshwater security. Each new stop explores a different topic from the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security. In addition to GWP and Wuhan International Water Academy (IWLA), ‘Season 2’ will be co-organised with various partners working in the transboundary water governance space. The first session focuses on international dispute settlement, co-organised by GWP and IWLA, and takes place on 21 September.

Africa Climate Week 2020

Africa Climate Week 2020 was set to place on 20-24 April in Kampala, Uganda, however, in light of the Coronavirus crisis, the event has been postponed - a new date is yet to be announced. The theme remains “Partnering for transformation towards a low-carbon climate resilient and prosperous Africa: managing risks, seizing opportunities.”

River Basin Organisations – Key to Transboundary Water Cooperation

GWP and Wuhan International Water Law Academy are collaborating on a series of events called the “Transboundary freshwater security governance train”. In six online sessions, key topics on transboundary water cooperation are highlighted, with examples from different locations around the globe. The third session took place on 16 March on the topic, “River Basin Organisations (RBOs) and the Implementation of Treaty Commitments”, with about 140 participants. Experts agree that RBOs play a key role in international water law implementation – this session explained why.

Youth About COVID-19: “I Feel Honoured to Be a Water Ambassador”

GWP and the World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW) collaborate on a storytelling initiative to make the voices of youth heard on water. Reflecting on the current challenging times, with the world battling a health crisis, we asked youth how the COVID-19 outbreak has changed their daily routines in different parts of the world. This is the second instalment in the series.
