Twenty-five years ago, the European Union and the Southern Mediterranean partners committed to turning the Mediterranean basin into an area of dialogue, exchange and cooperation, guaranteeing peace, stability and prosperity. The 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration reminds us that a strengthened Mediterranean partnership remains a strategic imperative for the European Union, as the challenges the region continues to face require a common response. Recognising growing interdependences, the new Agenda for the Mediterranean aspires to turn common challenges into opportunities, in a mutual interest approach. Servicing these, regional cooperation efforts will continue, with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) as a focal point, supporting sub-regional and inter-regional cooperation, including with African partners, and joint initiatives between partner countries across the board.

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development2021

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the core United Nations platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The 2021 edition takes place on 6-15 July. GWP Executive Secretary Darío Soto-Abril will address a SDG 6 Special Event in connection to the HLPF on 9 July.

Multi-stakeholder Position Paper on the new Indonesian Water Bill

Global Water Partnership Southeast Asia and its partners in Indonesia successfully formulated a position paper on the inclusion of community-based water and sanitation program for the Water Resources Law Draft of the Republic of Indonesia. The paper was presented and accepted by the Parliament after series of meetings and workshop co-organized by GWP-SEA together with Unicef Indonesia, Center for Regulation Policy and Governance (CRPG), and Jejaring AMPL (Indonesia’s Water and Sanitation Networks). The discussions that were held on September 2018 involved civil societies, non-governmental organizations, government representatives, academics, related partners, and mass media.

Interlinkages between forest management and water resources in the Drin basin analysed in transboundary capacity building workshop

The challenges and cross-sectoral benefits of sustainable forest and water management in the Drin basin were discussed during the two-day capacity building workshop. Practitioners and decision makers from the Drin river basin countries gathered virtually on the 16 and 17 December 2020 to discuss the crucial interlinkages between sustainable forest management and integrated water resources management in addressing environmental and social challenges in the region.
