In the face of profound global water challenges, on World Water Day 2018 five global multi-stakeholder partnerships representing business, governments, intergovernmental organisations, academia, and civil society organisations announced a new collaboration effort designed to accelerate progress toward ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation around the world. GWP South Asia attended the Transboundary Rivers of South Asia (TROSA) Annual Learning Forum 2018 held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 24 to 25 July 2018. The theme of the forum was “Partnerships for Inclusive Water Governance in South Asian River Basin Forum”.

Floods are a recurrent natural calamity in Pakistan, followed by earthquakes, cyclones and drought. However, drought is more damaging than floods in terms of food insecurity. Evidence of chronic water shortages have been painfully evident in some parts of Pakistan in recent years, due to low rainfall and extreme variations in temperature.

GWP has committed to “building a water secured world” via its unique property--multiple-stakeholders participation (MSP). Over twenty years, the diverse network of GWP has depended on MSP that helps GWP promote its vision and missions, and set up partnerships with different organisations from 84 countries. WWF8 appears a festival to GWP and all concerning water issues who gathered in Brazil which is the 5th largest country with 85% vegetation, to exchange theories, practical lessons and achievements and develop networking.

On August 17, GWP granted formal accreditation to GWP Colombia - or “Alianza Colombiana para el Agua”, which is the local name. Colombia is a country recognised by its technical capacity in Latin America and beyond.

GWP WA is collaborating with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to support the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) to integrate flood and drought management and develop early warning for its climate change adaptation measures.

Gender mainstreaming is a priority and a critical cross cutting issue required for achieving the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) goals and objectives.

A one-day meeting consultation / engagement meeting on the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus initiative in Nigeria with key stakeholders was organized on 21 February 2018.
