GWP and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) launched a new Perspectives Paper, “Storing Water: A new integrated approach for resilient development." The launch took place in a webinar on 24 February, gathering about 300 people for what is to be the start of a broad cross-sector dialogue on water storage.
The concept of gender mainstreaming in water resources management is
not new, but we are not advancing at the pace we need. Why is that? How can countries accelerate progress towards gender mainstreaming in water resources management?
The countries of the world have jointly committed to achieve the SDGs through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, including the SDG #6 on water and sanitation, central to achieve the other SDGs, particularly related to agriculture, energy, disaster resilience, health, environment and ecosystems, economic growth, and SDG #16 on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
Twenty-five years ago, the European Union and the Southern Mediterranean partners committed to turning the Mediterranean basin into an area of dialogue, exchange and cooperation, guaranteeing peace, stability and prosperity. The 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration reminds us that a strengthened Mediterranean partnership remains a strategic imperative for the European Union, as the challenges the region continues to face require a common response. Recognising growing interdependences, the new Agenda for the Mediterranean aspires to turn common challenges into opportunities, in a mutual interest approach. Servicing these, regional cooperation efforts will continue, with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) as a focal point, supporting sub-regional and inter-regional cooperation, including with African partners, and joint initiatives between partner countries across the board.
Coordinated by GWP Eastern Africa and implemented by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory, $13, 079,540 from the Adaptation Fund will go towards strengthening smallholder farmers’ and pastoralists’ resilience to the adverse effects of drought in the IGAD region.
A second Public Consultation on the Sevan Basin Management Plan was held in Armenia from June 11 to 17 July, 2020. The consultation was organised on the programme of measures for Sevan and Hrazdan river basins districts. This is part of the River Basin Management Plans (RBMP) developed for Sevan and Hrazdan river basins within EUWI+.
On World Water Day, the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme is announcing a major upgrade and new resources on its website to better share the challenges and opportunities countries face when implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Several new items include an IWRM Action Searcher, an interactive map, and stakeholder reports.
The Expert Group Meeting on Flow Regulation and Environmental Flows in the Drina River basin was held virtually on March 29. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the needs for applying environmental flows and formalizing flow regulation in the Basin.
